What bacteriostatic water is
Bacteriostatic water is sterile water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol. The benzyl alcohol is not an active ingredient — it is a bacteriostatic preservative. It suppresses bacterial growth, which is what allows a multi-dose vial to be punctured repeatedly without the contents spoiling quickly. That is the entire point of the product.
It is the standard diluent for reconstituting lyophilised research peptides. Every freeze-dried peptide we sell arrives as a powder and has to be brought into solution before research use; bacteriostatic water is what that is done with. It adds nothing to the compound itself.
The honest bound: bacteriostatic water is a diluent, not a peptide and not a therapeutic. It must not be confused with sterile water for injection (no preservative) or with saline (0.9% sodium chloride, a different solute). Benzyl alcohol is also not appropriate for every use case in the literature — preserved diluents are avoided in some contexts precisely because of the preservative.
Where it sits in the catalogue
| Product | What it is | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| Bacteriostatic water | Sterile water + 0.9% benzyl alcohol (preservative) | Reconstituting peptides for multi-dose use |
| Sterile water for injection | Water only, no preservative | Single-use reconstitution (not stocked here) |
| Saline 0.9% | Water + sodium chloride | Different solute; not a peptide diluent of choice (not stocked here) |
Every lyophilised peptide we sell needs it. That is why it is the cheapest line we carry and the highest-repeat item — it is the one purchase that goes with all the others.
Supply, handling and documentation
Supplied as sealed vials of preservative-containing water, 3ml and 10ml presentations.
- Store sealed at room temperature, out of direct light.
- Once opened, keep the vial clean and closed between uses — the whole function of the preservative depends on it.
- Add water to the peptide vial, not the reverse: aim the stream at the glass wall, then swirl gently rather than shaking.
See the reconstitution guide for the method step by step.

BAC water: common questions
Is bacteriostatic water the same as sterile water?
No. Sterile water contains no preservative and is single-use; bacteriostatic water contains 0.9% benzyl alcohol so an opened vial resists bacterial growth. They are different products.
Is it the same as saline?
No. Saline is water plus sodium chloride. Bacteriostatic water is water plus benzyl alcohol as a preservative.
What is the benzyl alcohol for?
It is a bacteriostatic preservative. It does not treat anything — it prevents bacterial growth so a punctured vial keeps.
Is this a medicine?
No. It is supplied as a research chemical/reagent. It is not a medicine, it is not for human or veterinary use, and nothing on this page is medical advice.
Which sizes do you stock?
3ml and 10ml vials, priced per vial. Both are listed in the price table above.
How should it be stored?
Sealed, at room temperature, out of direct light. Keep it clean and closed once opened.
