What SS-31 is
SS-31 — better known in the literature as elamipretide, and formerly MTP-131 — is a tetrapeptide designed to concentrate in the inner mitochondrial membrane. Its defining characteristic is that it is not a signalling peptide at all in the usual sense: it is a mitochondria-targeted molecule, developed to interact with cardiolipin, the phospholipid that anchors the electron transport chain complexes in place.
The research interest is straightforward and it is unusually well-documented for a research peptide: elamipretide has been through multiple clinical programmes (Barth syndrome, primary mitochondrial myopathy, heart failure, age-related macular degeneration), which is a far deeper human evidence base than nearly anything else on this shelf. Those programmes have also produced genuinely mixed results — some endpoints missed, some showed signals. That is what the honest summary looks like.

Unlike MOTS-c and Epitalon, SS-31 has been tested in humans under formal trial conditions. It has also failed to reach approval on some of those endpoints. Both facts belong in a fair description.
